How to get a useful answer from a calculator
A calculator turns your assumptions into a number. Change the assumption and the number changes, so the value is less in the headline figure than in seeing how sensitive it is to each input.
Talk to a verified expert- 01
Test the assumption, not just the answer
Try your expected return one or two percentage points lower. If the plan only works at the optimistic figure, it is worth knowing that before you commit to it.
- 02
Separate what you contribute from what compounds
Every investment calculator here splits the projection into your own money and the estimated growth on it. Early on the split is mostly contribution; the balance shifts with time, not with the size of the instalment.
- 03
For loans, look past the monthly instalment
A longer tenure always lowers the EMI and always raises the total interest. The scenario tables show both figures together so the trade-off is visible in one place.
- 04
Remember what is excluded
Unless a page says otherwise, results are before tax, inflation and transaction costs. Each calculator lists what it leaves out under “Important considerations”.
Financial planning tools
Planners work the other way round from a calculator: you start from the goal and they work out what reaching it would take, drawing on the same engines as the calculators above.
Emergency Fund Planner
Size an emergency fund against your essential monthly spending, see how many months you are already covered for, and what closing the gap would take each month.
Prepay or Invest Planner
Compare paying extra into a loan against investing the same money, with the interest saved and the projected corpus side by side under assumptions you set.
Home Purchase Planner
See what a property might cost by the time you buy, what the deposit would take to save, and what the loan on the remainder would cost each month.
Education Planner
Estimate what a course will cost by the time it starts, what your current saving reaches by then, and the monthly contribution the fee would need.
Retirement Planner
Work out the corpus your retirement needs, what your current saving is projected to reach, and the monthly contribution that would close the gap.
